Definitions, evidence and limits

Ranks and colours

Every measure is ranked 1 (best for the offense) to 32. Sack rate, interceptions and lost fumbles rank lower-is-better. Colours show where the rank falls: the top fifth is darkest green and the bottom fifth darkest red. Volume and style measures are shown without colour because more passing or running is neither better nor worse.

Consensus rank

The consensus rank orders teams by the median of their ranks across that unit's measures. Consistent means at least 70% of the measures sit on the same side as that median; mixed means they split, so no single column should be read as the verdict. Rushing uses EPA and success per designed run, yards per designed run, RB yards per carry, 10+ yard runs, rush yards over expected, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns per game. Passing uses EPA and success per dropback, yards per dropback, 20+ yard dropbacks, passing yards and touchdowns per game, sack rate and interceptions.

Measures

EPA / designed run: Expected points added per designed run (scrambles excluded).
Successful runs: Share of designed runs with positive EPA.
Yards / designed run: Yards per designed run, all rushers.
RB yards / carry: Running backs' rushing yards per carry.
10+ yard runs: Share of designed runs gaining 10 yards or more.
Rush yards over expected / carry: Next Gen Stats: yards gained beyond what the blocking and defenders predicted, per carry, for NGS-qualified rushers.
Rushing yards / g: All players' rushing yards per game.
Rushing TDs / g: All players' rushing touchdowns per game.
Rushing fumbles lost / g: Lost fumbles on rushing plays per game. Shown for context; fumbles vary a lot from week to week.
RB fantasy points / g: PPR points by the team's running backs per game, the same scoring as the defensive matchups pages.
EPA / dropback: Expected points added per dropback, including sacks and scrambles.
Successful dropbacks: Share of dropbacks with positive EPA.
Yards / dropback: Yards per dropback, sacks included.
20+ yard dropbacks: Share of dropbacks gaining 20 yards or more.
Passing yards / g: Passing yards per game.
Passing TDs / g: Passing touchdowns per game.
Sack rate: Share of dropbacks ending in a sack.
Interceptions / g: Interceptions thrown per game.
QB fantasy points / g: PPR points by the team's quarterbacks per game.
WR fantasy points / g: PPR points by the team's wide receivers per game.
TE fantasy points / g: PPR points by the team's tight ends per game.
Dropbacks / g: Dropbacks (pass attempts, sacks and scrambles) per game.
Designed runs / g: Designed runs per game.
Neutral dropback rate: Dropback share in neutral game situations: a style measure, not better or worse.

Samples and limits

Early in the season each team has played only a game or two, so ranks move a lot from week to week. Choosing an earlier week excludes every later game; the last-four view uses each team's four most recent games. Rush yards over expected covers only rushers Next Gen Stats qualifies each week, so a backfield led by smaller-role players may have a thin sample (the carries count is shown). Lost fumbles are shown for context and aren't part of the consensus, because they vary a lot from week to week.
